Field Notes

Description:

Venomous medium-sized pit viper. Base color is beige to tan to pinkish to coppery with darker hourglass shaped cross-bands. Chunky build and blocky-shaped head. Elliptical pupil.

Habitat:

A common upland snake in South Carolina--farms, fields, forests even suburbs and cities. This individual was found in the Hell Hole Swamp area of Berkley County in the low country of South Carolina, where there is a mixture of longleaf pine savannah, hardwood forest, Carolina bays and cypress swamps. While not semi-aquatic, these snakes are comfortable in lowland habitats with water.

Notes:

Snake was spotted during the annual Under a Low Country Moon Hell Hole Swamp Nature Interpretive Weekend. All snakes are photographed and released where found.
