Field Notes

Description:

About 23mm body length. Green colouration with dark and red markings, stocky overall appearance, due to the relatively short abdomen and absence of wings. This species is a common food throughout Mexico.

Habitat:

Semi-arid region in central Mexico, at about 1800 m.a.s.l

Notes:

Locally known as "chapulín".

Thanks Felix. I haven't put any of them on, concentrating more on spottings I can ID. Around 25-30% of my spottings that have been identified are first time on PN. I'm trying to keep that rate to get new stuff on. I have some posted that aren't ID'd and a bunch more that I haven't posted that I have no idea what they are. I'll try to pick out some unique grasshoppers and post them. Thanks for the tip.

Hey, @Tukup Grasshoppers are tricky, in particular the Amazon region. However there's a guy on iNaturalist who's pretty good at IDing them. I'll have a look at your spottings. Cheers!

I envy you being able to identify a grasshopper Felix. From all I've heard, it is almost impossible to get them down to the Genus species level. I have even stopped taking pictures of all the grasshoppers we have in Ecuador as I cannot identify them. Do you have a reference (other than Wikipedia) that helps identify grasshoppers? Thanks for sharing this one.
