Field Notes

Description:

It is an annual plant growing to 16-35 inches tall, with grey-green branched stems. The leaves are lanceolate, 1–4 cm long. The flowers are most commonly an intense blue colour, produced in flowerheads (capitula) 1.5–3 cm diameter, with a ring of a few large, spreading ray florets surrounding a central cluster of disc florets. The blue pigment is protocyanin, which in roses is red.

Habitat:

Is a small annual flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe.
In the past it often grew as a weed in crop fields, hence its name. It is now endangered in its native habitat by agricultural intensification, particularly over-use of herbicides, destroying its habitat.

Notes:

Natuurpunt reservaat.

Congrats on your 1000th spotting Marta! Truly inspiring! :)
I think the nature group here in Flanders (Natuurpunt) is making an effort to reintroduce all these wild species.
It grew abundantly in the wheat and corn fields and that is why one of it's names is " Corn FLower" It is very sensitive to chemicals and the use of pesticides is one reason that it has become endangered.
Yes, Emma. And here too. Such a beautiful plant.
Can you believe that this is on the endangered list in California?
