Field Notes

Description:

The deathcap is responsible for most fatal mushroom poisonings worldwide, hence the name. It has smooth olivaceous green (sometimes yellowish) cap with faint radiating fibers, the stalk has a membranous partial veil (skirtlike ring), the mushroom is bulbous at the base of the stalk and has a saclike volva.

Habitat:

Spotted in Belgrad forest in Istanbul in a part mainly dominated by beech trees. Approx. Elevation 100 m.

Notes:

The third photo could explain why there are so many deaths from this poisonous mushroom, only 25 cm from it is growing what I believe to be a green russula, there are a lot of greenish russulas that are considered edible.

Three, very interesting photos....three, very pretty photos....
Great series and great write up. I've heard of these. You'd think nature would make them less inviting. Scary
