Field Notes

Description:

The Deer Mouse is 3-4 inches. These were discovered stuck in our outside storage pail. Luckily I saved them. It has dark above and light below pattern in their fur. Varies from region to region. Some are pretty tan. They have a furry tail and prominent ears. It is a social creature, with groups of up to a dozen or more huddled together in winter. They depend on stored seeds for survival in winter.

Habitat:

Almost everywhere except in wet places. They are nocturnal and rest during the day in logs, burrows, trees, buildings, and bird nests.

Notes:

Deer Mice are very clean animals. They spend most of their day washing themselves and their babies. Their nests are also very clean and soft.
