World Donkey Day is celebrated to raise awareness about one of the most enduring animals in the horse family, a likable beast of burden and companion to humans for millennia. The donkey (Equus africanus asinus) is the domesticated form of the African wild ass, E. africanus. Domestication is thought to have taken place about 5000 years ago, likely in Egypt or Mesopotamia. It is estimated that there are over 40 million donkeys in the world, used mostly as draught or pack animals. More recently, the trade of donkeys has been fueled by the demand for donkey hide as a source of gelatin for so-called traditional medicine products. This has resulted in unsustainable and cruel donkey breeding and slaughtering practices, significantly impacting animal welfare and the livelihood of humans in source countries in Africa and South America.
