Field Notes

Description:

One of the more colourful corvids, the Eurasian jay is actually fairly shy and rarely leaves the cover of trees. I have noticed a small population at the University of Essex campus that seem not to mind humans anymore and can be seen in the open, but this one was very timid. In the autumn they gather acorns to see them through the winter.

Habitat:

Usually a woodland bird, only seen briefly while it flies from tree to tree. Its colours provide surprisingly good camouflage.

Notes:

I found this shy individual just on the edge of the University of Essex campus, at the start of the Wivenhoe Trail.

Thanks harsuame! Alice - haha, noisy is definitely the word for the campus jays! When they get into fights with the local rookery of crows, the noise they generate is phenomenal.
The words I would say for the same kind of Jay in Croatia is "Noisy" and "Bossy"
