Field Notes

Description:

The tiny insect seen on this frog's head is a fairyfly. It was less than 1 mm long! This family includes the world's smallest known insects. They are insect egg parasitoids. I'm not sure why it was on the frog, but it didn't stay long.

Habitat:

Habitat: Resting(?) on Gray/Cope's Gray Tree Frog - Hyla sp. in a rural backyard.

Notes:

*The genus ID is pretty definite; but, while the species ID is likely, it is tentative.

I was thinking what a sweet name for a little frog... then the pennies dropped. Congratulations, Christine.

Thanks so much Chun! I uploaded a cropped shot - sorry for the poor quality!
Awesome spot Christine! But can you upload a cropped version as well? I want to take a closer look at this amazing insect.
