They were in the same pond as some alligators.

this is definitely the Florida Softshell Turtle as bandhturtlesite suggests. Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_softshell_turtle I know this one very well. I lived on Sanibel for ten years. There are no other species that resemble the one in your photo
