Field Notes

Description:

The adults are gray and 6 to l2 mm long. They have black stripes on the thorax and a black and gray checkered abdomen. Each antennae has a single and a branched bristle. They resemble house flies, but are larger.

Habitat:

Typically found near and in forests where their young feed on tent caterpillars.

Notes:

These flies are apparently hibernating in our house as I've found several in the last few days. I'm not sure what is breaking their hibernation, although it has been warm the last couple of days.
