Field Notes

Description:

A fairly small butterfly that has quite a short flight period. They overwinter as larvae and don't emerge as adults until mid-July, but only live until the end of August. I remember seeing about 3 of them flitting around together. This one is a male, identified by the brown bands in the orange sections of the forewings. Common throughout England.

Habitat:

Prefers anywhere you find low-lying, scrubby bushes growing close to grasslands. I found these on a meadow in Colchester, growing in a part that was overgrown with thistles, nettles and various other scrubby plants.

Notes:

Found on my way to work one morning, but couldn't quite get a good shot. Still, recognisable as a gatekeeper so decided to finally post it!
