Description:

This moth looked exactly like a couple of fallen leaves when resting. 1 1/4" wingspan.

Habitat:

Meadow.

Ashish, I just realize Satyridae are butterflies - this one was definately a moth!

I feel these are from Satyridae family which mimics with dry leafs.. in ventral view of wings.

I found several similar but not exact matches online so I'm going to submit this one to bamona too & get their thoughts on it. If its the same species I can combine them.

The outer edge seems to differ too. There may be gender dimorphism?

Martin, I think you are right! This specimen was smaller & darker but probably the same species! SFShep, I try & find the species (or at least narrow down the search!) using my field guide, then I will search on bugguide but if I have no luck there I usually submit to butterfliesandmoths.org & hope the experts there can help!

How does one go about identifying that as a moth? Wait until it flies? I'm still trying to find a body and legs.
