Congratulations Morton1905, your Goldcrest is our Spotting of the Day: "The smallest of European birds at an average weight of only about 5 g (0.18 oz), this Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is our Spotting if the Day! The goldcrest has a very broad distribution that includes much of Eurasia and the islands of Macaronesia, and counts numerous recognized subspecies. This highly active insectivorous little bird, which can eat the equivalent if its own weight in a day, is associated with coniferous woodlands and flocks of tits. The genus and species names Regulus are derived from the Latin "regulus", a diminutive of "rex", which means king. As it happens the goldcrest was studied by some "kings" of taxonomy: first described by Linnaeus himself in his Systema Naturae in 1758 as Motacilla regulus, it was later moved to the warbler genus Sylvia by English naturalist John Latham, and finally to its current genus by French zoologist Georges Cuvier".
