Description:

large brown beetle. almost flew into me, and then landed on the road. Wouldn't hold still long.

Habitat:

Spotted flying across the road, near a bunch of wild flowers and city trees

Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapevine_beetle - there it mentions about a southern variety that has the lighter colored legs like in you pics.
