Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized plover with a compact, solid build and an upright, almost statuesque stance. Winter plumage cool grey above and clean white below, giving a smooth, understated appearance. Bill short, stout, and straight; legs dark, often appearing blackish. Frequently pauses motionless between feeding bouts

Habitat:

Observed on wide intertidal flats at low tide, standing and feeding on exposed sand and mud among Dunlins and Oystercatchers. Typical of open coastal environments closely linked to tidal movements.

Notes:

Stands out by posture rather than colour — calm, watchful, often slightly apart from busier waders. Presence fits coastal setting; contrast with Golden Plover, which is largely inland in winter. In flight (not observed here), black axillaries are diagnostic.
