Gray Wolf
Canis lupus
63.6542, -149.569
Field Notes
Description:
A large canine with a long and bushy winter coat. Gray wolves are predominantly mottled gray in color, although nearly pure white, red, and brown or black also occur.
Habitat:
Anywhere they want to be. Tundra, forests, plains, mountains. They form packs and will follow wherever their prey leads them up to several hundred miles.
Notes:
This is a lifetime first and was a bucket list item for me. Absolutely my favorite animal on earth. Obviously, I want to see more, but I got to see this one because my tour bus in Denali was stopped because of heavy snow for over an hour. This wolf showed up while I was taking pictures of the accumulating snow and slowly trotted down the length of the river while I watched. I also took a short video that I may try to add to this spotting later.
