Ground Cherry
Physalis sp. probably P. angularis
37.0797, -85.4795
Field Notes
Description:
Broad serrated leaves on a low growing plant of bush-like form. Close cousin to the paper lantern.
Habitat:
Rich, loose, shaded soil behind the barn.
Notes:
The fruit is generally edible and the plant has been widely cultivated globally, far enough back that it is generally considered native to most regions. Seeds easily and does well in poor soil or containers. Because of the unusual fruit casing, larger varieties are also popular as ornamentals.
