Thank you, C.Sydes. That is a very interesting piece of info. Who woulda thunk it?
they look like petals but actually they're not, each one is a small flower referred to as a floret. The ray florets ("petals") are normally sterile while the tiny florets in the central disc are the fertile ones which produce the seeds
