Description:

"The bark is light brown or silvery gray, broken on the surface into thick appressed scales and sometimes roughened with excrescenses; pattern is very distinctive." (Description of Celtis occidentalis from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtis_occidentalis ).

Habitat:

In mixed forest at Lake Springfield Park.

Thanks very much Brian. I was indeed a bit concerned about the parallel alignment of the wings that I saw in images of the winged elm. Thanks for your correction. I have added a fourth photo -- simply a zoom of poor quality -- of the leaves. Perhaps it is helpful (perhaps not).
This is most likely a species of hackberry (which is in the elm family, Ulmaceae). Leaves would be helpful in its identification but I'm not sure I could get it to species without some help! Winged elm has small wings along the stem that are parallel to the stem. I'm not sure what the bark looks like on it but i don't think it's like this.
