Field Notes

Description:

The famous hellbender, interestingly even how it got that name is unclear. The most common story I can find is that people who saw it compared it to a demon "hell bent" on returning. Or the way its loose skin moved looking demonic. Either way, this is a harmless North American salamander, related to the giant salamanders of China. Their conservation status is Near Threatened. Some other common names include devil dog, mud-devil, lasagna lizard (haha what), and snot otter (which is just mean, but equally hilarious).

Habitat:

Found in North America in the States of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and even a small bit of Oklahoma and Kansas. So its pretty widespread.
