Two, beautiful photos....a beautiful weevil and it's beautiful cocoon....
Thank you, Daniele, for the SOTD!! I was happy I came across this one :) I've never seen it before. Thank you, Kostas, Felix, António, Christine, Sarah, Polilla, Hema!!
Congratulations Irena, this great find is our Spotting of the Day! "Does it look like a delicate mesh with a green heart inside? This weevil cocoon (Hypera sp.) is our Spotting of the Day! The protective web is made by the weevil's larva, which will pupate inside it. It helps protecting against predators and parasitoids". It really makes you think that a spider created the AWESOME webbing on the cocoon!! I am HAPPY you figured it out, Irena!! :)
This lovely green pupa transforms into a totally non green weevil! https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Hypera+postica+-&FORM=HDRSC2
Your links look like your spotting too!! I would say ALFALFA WEEVIL IT IS!! :)
Hm..this too looks similar. Thanks for the link! I found similar cocoons here http://slideplayer.com/slide/6025975/, https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/fieldcropsipm/insects/alfalfa-weevil.php, http://www.alfalfaipm.ento.vt.edu/Alf_Weevil/Alf_Wvl_Stages.html ... so I thought it might be Alfalfa Weevil. But it's true, I didn' t check other species of genus Hypera.
I looked up the Alfalfa Weevil pupa in a cocoon & I think you are RIGHT!! Here is a link to what I believe best closely resembles your photo!! http://swellbugs.blogspot.com/2011/04/hypera-brunneipennis.html
WOW!! What an intricately woven sac!!
