Field Notes

Description:

This is a small snake with adults averaging about 40 cms. It is one of the most common snakes here in the Hua Hin area, south of Bangkok, Thailand. It is a rear fanged snake, with venom glands, but unable to inject that venom in a single bite as the dangerous species do, so it is effectively harmless to humans. Still, many people kill them in their gardens due to ignorance and fear.

Habitat:

This was found in my own garden. I see them occasionally, and leave them to go about their way. I expect they mostly live on geckos, which are very plentiful, and I have seen them eating frogs.

Notes:

This photo was taken with identification as the main purpose - thus I shot it so we can see the distinctive head features plus the colours and markings on both the back and underbelly.

Great spotting. That ventral patterning is fascinating. I wonder if it would play a tune on an old pianola. Welcome to Project Noah.
