Description:
Skinny trees growing precariously at the edge of a rainforest cliff. The leaves appear especially glossy after the heavy downpour, each with a prominent central vein. The bark is a light color.
La'i trees (Hawaiian language) are also known as cabbage palms, good luck plants and palm lilies. They produce inedible red berries but the rhizomes are edible and very sweet.
Habitat:
Seen in the tropical rainforest of Akaka Falls State Park.
Notes:
It was introduced to Hawaii. However, it's native to southeastern Asia, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia, northeastern Australia, the Indian Ocean, and parts of Polynesia.
