Field Notes
Description:
This leaf-footed bug (true bug) was mostly black in color. It had some orange markings and also had some white spots or marks covering its' body. It was a little more than an inch in length.
Habitat:
The Leaf-footed bug featured in the photos belongs to the Tribe Coreini, Subfamily Coreinae, Family Coreidae (Leaf-footed Bugs), Infraorder Pentatomomorpha, Suborder Heteroptera (True Bugs), and the Order Hemiptera (True Bugs, Cicadas, Hoppers, Aphids and Allies).
I am listing information for the order Hemiptera.
Leaf-footed bugs live in and around their food sources which include developing fruit, leaves, and stems.

Notes:
This guy was spotted walking across our blacktop on campus. All I can say is researching this guy was not easy. There was not a lot of information I could find on this particular Leaf-footed bug. According to Wikipedia there are 20 genera and 70 described species in the Coreini tribe of Leaf-footed bugs. That being said it was very difficult to find information on the tribe. There are at least 50-80,000 species in the order Hemiptera.
Fun Facts: Although they can be a pest in the garden some species are used as a biological control of other pest insects.
