Field Notes

Description:

Just hatching this morning in the sunshine on the garden umbrella, two pods of mantis hatching.

Habitat:

City garden

Notes:

Only noticed they were finally hatching as I was having a mid morning cofee at the patio table. Delighted to catch them hatching out!

Ive also noticed they came out bent in half with their antennae folded under their mandibles and straightened up in the sun.

I would agree with you. The egg case is a match and the nymphs look similar to Orthodera novaezealandiae. :-) I forgot about that species, haha! Great find either way. Thanks for adding this spotting to the Mantid mission!
Thanks ForestDragon, have added them to the Mantid Mission. I suspect they are NZ Praying Mantis - Orthodera novaezealandiae which have similar cases in my book but the cases and nymph look very similar to your link.
Cool find! They might be Orthodera ministralis. Here is a link that may help: http://brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_mantids/GardenMantid.htm This would be a lovely addition to the Marvelous Mantids of the World mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/15738247
