Description:

Family: Geometridae, Subfamily: Ennominae. A common geometer moth resembling a leaf. Fall flier. Wingspan: 43-60 mm. Unevenly scalloped wings are orange/yellow with variable specks and blotches of brown. Hosts: Deciduous trees including maple, oak, basswood, popular.

Open woodlands

Attracted to light. Also known as Notch-wing moth

I think the moth falling when handled is a defensive mimic! When I first picked the one I found up, it fell to the ground like a leaf, and I actually lost it amongst the leaves for a few moments.
J, strange you should say that. When I first touched it on the wall, it fell right to the ground before I prompted it up on my finger. HA! Thanks for telling me.
