Description:

" Hide all ye cowards! all you birds, and know that the Mantis is invincible!
Huh! stayin' on top of the food chain is chicken."

" I'm a mighty brown mantis with a three inches total body length."

Mantodea (or mantises, mantes) is an order of insects that contains over 2,400 valid species and about 430 genera in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. Most of the species are in the family Mantidae.

The English common name for any species in the order is "praying mantis", because of the typical "prayer-like" posture with folded fore-limbs, although the eggcorn "preying mantis" is sometimes used in reference to their predatory habits. In Europe and other regions, the name "praying mantis" refers to only a single species, Mantis religiosa. The closest relatives of mantises are the termites and cockroaches (order Blattodea). They are sometimes confused with phasmids (stick/leaf insects) and other elongated insects such as grasshoppers and crickets.

Habitat:

It can be found in divers habitats from forest to cultivated farmlands and populated lands.

Great series Shekainah - the first shot especially!
Amazing spotting!
I love this series and the story! I can't find a good online resource for info on this species unfortunately. It seems that people do keep and breed them as pets in some places. I also saw it called the Giant Philippines Mantis though I don't know if it is a commonly used name. I think yours is a male. Here are a couple of the images I found for the species: http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&tbo=d&biw=1024&bih=677&tbm=isch&tbnid=ZVJUg_KR0EcSBM:&imgrefurl=http://www.martingoss.co.uk/photogallery/Mantis/&docid=Zkr6i2Oy3pQg5M&imgurl=http://www.martingoss.co.uk/photogallery/Mantis/Hierodula_parviceps_6.jpg&w=800&h=600&ei=a_AFUcr-AcSt0AHLs4C4Cw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=4&vpy=124&dur=2165&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=139&ty=108&sig=104442523070123481879&page=1&tbnh=133&tbnw=194&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:85 http://www.flickr.com/photos/weetmanl/7439205658/
Lovely pictures Shekai! Even the flower it is on adds to the story. It is sitting on a Cockscomb flower (Celosia cristata). As in "Palong ng Manok" in Tagalog :)
I think the pic #1 calls for many funny captions... :-)
That first shot is priceless!
Wonderful and nice spotting Shekainah!
Great photos, really love the first one. So much expression in it eyes, I'ed swear it was looking at the chicken! :-)
Ha ha ha I like your humor friend, actually its my father who thought me to stay still the whole day and watch unusual things happening around. Thanks ChunXingWong.
Months ago you uploaded a spotting about ladybirds being watched by a praying mantis. Now you have uploaded a spotting about a praying mantis being watched by a chicken. Months later...... I assume you will upload a spotting about a chicken being watched by a monitor lizard. =P
Thanks kuya noel, @ Smith'sZoo indee the flower is beautiful looks like a chicken crown but I don't know its name.
Wow! Stunning flower that it is sitting on! ;)
Haha look at her eye's LOL @_@ P.S (I assume the Mantis is female because of the color.)
Thanks Chief Redearth and Argy Bee. Is there a mission where I could put this spotting?
Great followup to your other mantid foodchain spotting :-) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16128846
