Mayfly

A brown and beige Mayfly of about 1 cm in body length. Order Ephemeroptera, a name reflecting the very short life span of the adult. This is an ancient group of insects and the only one to have a winged subimago stage which undergoes an additional molt to the sexual adult. This is probably a subimago since the wings are cloudy and fringed and the eyes are not fully developed. Subimagos also tend to be more colorless than the final sexually mature adult. The niad stages are aquatic. There are 42 families within the Ephemeroptera and thousands of species worldwide.
