Field Notes

Description:

Classified as songbirds, mockingbirds measure approximately ten inches in length and are grey in color, with white patches on the wings.

Habitat:

Habitat yard on Belton Lake.

Notes:

This bird was busy defending its berries from a flock of small birds that was passing through.
Texas designated the mockingbird as official state bird in 1927. Northern Mockingbirds have extraordinary vocal abilities - they can sing up to 200 songs, including the songs of other birds, insect and amphibian sounds, even an occasional mechanical noise.
