Field Notes

Description:

Distinctive, large orange and black butterfly with black and white markings. Yellow spots on the upper part of the forewings. Can sometimes be confused with the slightly smaller Viceroy, which is a Monarch mimic.

Habitat:

Seaside dunes, Smith Point County Park, NY.

Notes:

These were flying in great numbers across the beach but most of them didn't stop at all or long enough for photos. I am sure these guys are migrating south for the winter.
