You have to remember that so far there are only between 150,000 and 160,000 species of moth identified and classified and although estimates vary there could be as many again still to be officially classified.
Secondly, there is no guarantee that this is even Xanthorhoe Genus, similar moths are in Melanthia, Colostygia, Epirrhoe, Scotopteryx and several other Genera.
Geometer, of which there are about 26,000 known so far is the closest we can guarantee.
We have several experts on Project Noah including one who, with a colleague, is involved in the taxonomic classification of Spanish Moths, and he regularly goes through my collection to try to identify some of the unknowns. It is quite probable that around 30-40% may remain unknown because they have not yet been classified.
The same applies to many other Arthropods.
There are way to many unidentified moths in general. I usually start with the most obvious moth. then work from there, thus sent you the warning that it was the most obvious guess. Will be watching to see if you ca nail down a definitive ID or if it will just have to be a Xanthorhoe sp. :)
It's closer to the Green Carpet than the Garden Carpet, and closer still to the Silver-ground Carpet but as you say there are so many similar ones. Did you know there are 4,500 known moths and perhaps as many again unknown in Spain! There are 85 known moths of the Xanthorhoe Genus in Spain.
Please confirm this suggestion with more knowledgeable in your area. Geometridae have so many subtile differences. Additional UK Ref: http://butterfly-conservation.org/2401-1350/garden-carpet.html
