Wildchild this is not a Dolomedes it is a native sheetweb spider one of the Cambridgea species (verified by Landcare Research)

They vary a bit so I think you got it right. Maybe a spider expert will tell us otherwise. Could you have had some water around there? or maybe they can live away from water? ... guess I'll have to read more.

I'm pretty certain because of the size ( 6-7cm or so end to end ) and central stripe markings on it but what doesn't quite match 100% is it has such a greeny gold abdomen a sheet web

Good find and IDing :) It might be an idea to include a reference in your spotting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomedes_minor I was amazed to discover it is a 'fishing spider' !!
