Field Notes

Description:

Small (approximately 0.25 cm) inedible berries in colors from green to yellow, and various shades of red. They were growing low to the ground, although the plant can grow up to 2 feet tall.

Habitat:

Originates from Mexico, West Indies and South America.

Notes:

Cultivated in Hawaii, non-native.

No, it doesn't appear to be edible. This site (in Spanish) mentions some uses: http://aprendeenlinea.udea.edu.co/ova/?q=node/689 USOS: La planta entera en decocción o maceración se usa en bebidas y bañas contra morderas de serpientes. Otros usos en medicina tradicional son: contra la dismenorrea, analgésico, antianémico y para curar trastornos de la piel.
