Thanks guys! Good point Johan!
The dead insect might also be a growth medium for the fungi. Just speculating.
Sergio, I saw several incidents of ants swarming over dead or dying organism in the jungle - including a Caecilian http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16225504 Thanks Carol!
I had an interesting discussion with Juan a couple weeks ago, I told him that I remembered seeing leaf cutter ants (Anta genus) cutting and carrying dead insects to their nest. Juan thought that there was something wrong with my memory, because Anta ants feed on fungi that grow on the leaves they stock in the nest, so there wouldn't be any reason for stocking those insect parts. Maybe someone can teach me better? Must I start researching for some medicine for my memory?
I think so, they tend to mainly be attracted to dead or dying organisms.
I've wanted to see one for ages too Sergio - hopefully the next time it will be a live one! Claire, they do look like moths with their wings spread.
Wow...in my classroom I has a specimen of a peanut headed moth...maybe it was really this?
Wonderful. This is one of my childhood icons, but I am still waiting to see one alive.
Thanks outdooreducation!
Thanks Jacob - I would have preferred a live one of course!
