Description:
Large, deciduous tree with compound leaves with leaflets tapering and curved. Nuts in clusters.
Habitat:
Area near Belton Lake.
Notes:
Pecan shells have been found in prehistoric sites dating back to 6750 BCE.
Pecans are highly nutritious, and have the distinction of being the first fresh snack food to be used in outer space, when NASA selected them as an alternative to freeze-dried foods for the Apollo 13 and 14 missions.
