Field Notes

Description:

Found these large fungi growing out of bark chips in our garden after heavy rain. Some were perhaps 20-25cm across.

Habitat:

Garden on limestone outcrop in foothills of Los Serranos mountains.

Thanks António, this is the first time I have seen these here in 11 years and after the heaviest rains we have seen for 11 years so it could be a long wait before we see them again! The one in the second picture was about 13mm across but I am sure some others were much bigger. I looked today and found shriveled, dried remains of the second one.
Malcolm nice find,at first i was thinking that it could be a Xerocomus subtomentosus,then after furder checking,comparing your suggestion,Boletus Badius and mine i realized that none of these species arrived to the huge size you refer on the description,so i arrived to the Boletus pinophilus,that can reach more than 20cm and like the latin name tell is common on pine trees,or pine trees remains.
Thanks Sprinkler Bird. I think they are Bay Bolete (Boletus badius) but am awaiting confirmation from the local expert.
