Field Notes

Description:

Pine cones produce seeds that are released and dispersed by wind, birds, rodents and sometimes wildfires. In the United States, around 100 different species of trees produce seed bearing cones. Each tree bears its own distinctive cone. Some cones from the trees grow as long as 2 feet. Many pine cones are used at this time of year for Christmas decorations. Could not find an exact scientific name for pine cone. Pinus is the scientific generic name for pine tree.

Habitat:

These lovely pine cones were very high up in a pine tree and I was unable to gather any from the ground to collect for any type of Christmas decoration. This pine tree is located very near a pond in a wooded area on Kinder Farm Park in Millersville, Maryland.
