Field Notes

Description:

Light-grey carpophores size of a golf ball or a chicken egg, with a hole with irregular and visible edges on top. Carpophores detached easily, and felt like they were left in the grass without a support. They were all dry, and on touch felt like a paper bag full of spores. Spores brown or dark olive in colour.

Habitat:

Seen close to border with Russia, in a very cold valley, surrounded by a very tall Caucasus mountain peaks, some of which reach over 5000m. Valley itself was on some 1900m of altitude, and is regularly beaten by harsh winds, and is composed of barren rocks, montane grasslands and coniferous or thorny-shrubs groves.
