Field Notes

Description:

Native New Zealand bird widespread in the lowlands of the North and South islands.. Length approx. 44-48cm. A marsh bird with rich purple-blue underparts, bulky red bill and white under the tail. Parrot like they often hold food in one claw while using the bill to break it apart.

Habitat:

Inhabit the margins of well vegetated lagoons and swamps of all kinds especially those adjacent to cultivated land. Often seen foraging in the open where they stalk about flicking their tails and dashing for cover when disturbed.

Notes:

Often called swamp hen and occurs on many Pacific Islands, Australia and across Southern Asia to Europe and Africa
