Puma
Puma concolor patagonico
-51.0481, -72.9325
Field Notes
Description:
I just returned from a 3-week visit to beautiful Patagonia (Chile and Argentina). The highlight of my visit to Torres del Paine National Park, Chile was the rare sighting of two pumas. This puma is so well camouflaged against the grass and rocks waiting to ambush the many guanacos that live in the park. It was sighted around 8pm along the main road and was startled by the many vans and buses on the road. Very beautiful cat.
Habitat:
Torres del Paine National Park open grass/shrub hillside along main park road Y-150.
Notes:
The puma is the top predator in Patagonia. Conservación Patagónica is actively conducting puma research and conservation: http://www.conservacionpatagonica.org/buildingthepark_biodiversity_puma….
