Field Notes

Description:

Trosia semirufa (formerly Trosia nigropunctigera), is one of the more striking of the smaller “white” moths. From a distance it appears white, but upon closer viewing it has 6 red spots on the top of its thorax and a row of black dots on each wing. The head, upper legs, abdomen and hindwings are also red.

Habitat:

This specimen was found on a door under a light at a mission station in the Amazon jungle of SE Ecuador (700 masl).

Notes:

This moth has also been called the "Strawberry Shortcake" moth, for obvious reasons. It's always a treat to find these, even though in our corner of the Amazon they are fairly common.
