Field Notes

Description:

very small mushrooms with caps about 5mm wide and a height of about 12mm. The caps were pinkish red with ridges radiating to the margins. Margins appeared slightly frilly. Gills were a flesh colour and well spaced. They appeared waxy. The stipe was a deep red verging on maroon. No frill seen. The older caps appeared to have a depression in the centre.

Habitat:

growing in damp grass under a giant acacia tree

Notes:

These mushrooms were so small; I could have easily missed them if not for their brilliant colour. They grew in a small cluster and were a beautiful shade of red.

Don't mind at all, Leuba. The process of elimination is sometimes key in identification. It is a lovely spottings. Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion auntnance123. I agree it looks like Marasmius but somehow even after looking at several photos from several resources, I am not convinced yet !. The pulcherripes species of Marasmius, I believe, is restricted to the US ??. The stipe on these little mushrooms appear slightly more robust than the Marasmius sp and so are the caps. I hope you don't mind but I need to look at one more source for confirmation - you might be right about the genus ! thanks again..
