Field Notes

Description:

Dominant tree in forests in Northern India at the edge of the foothills of the Himalaya. A member of the Dipterocarpaceae. We traveled from Mussoorie to Jolly Grant Airport--through Rajaji National Park on May 3, 2015 and there was a mass flowering of the Sal. The air was filled with a sweet fragrance.

Habitat:

Himalayan subtropic broadleaf forest.
