Field Notes

Description:

These are variously known by the names sand gnat, sand flea, no-see-um,granny nipper, chitra, punkie, or punky in the United States. Sand fly bites may leave large, red itchy bumps that may turn into a rash. These bumps are frequently several times as itchy as mosquito bites, and tend to last longer as well.

Habitat:

Beach; the last photo shows them surrounding two mating tiger beetles

Notes:

The photos are not good quality but it was the best I could get with the zoom lens I was carrying.
