Field Notes

Description:

A naturally emerged unidentified sapling. The tree has enormous leaves. The leaf in the last photo supporting the lens cap measures 77 cm long.

Habitat:

The sapling emerged naturally in an open area surrounded by trees (but which was recently opened to more light by a fallen tree) in a large semi-natural yard adjacent to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

Fruit bats often drop partially eaten fruit and digested seeds in this yard. I do not know if this tree emerged as a result of such a deposit.
