Description:
Reddish scaly bark on the upper trunk with thick grey/brown bark on the lower branches. Pine species can be difficult to tell apart, however the Scots pine needles are held in twos and are twisty in appearance. The pine cones (photo 3) are small and slim. Lower branches are often short lived.
Habitat:
Abundant in the Scottish highlands but due to it being popular for timber, plantations can be found throughout the UK. This tree was growing next to a lake in woodland.
