Field Notes

Description:

Small deciduous tree with simple, oval, alternate leaves. Spring blossoms are open feathery clusters that look smoky when they go to seed.

Habitat:

Sun to part shade. The American Smoke Tree grows in rocky woods and limestone slopes, and is often an understory tree.

Notes:

The native American tree is highly resistant to rotting and produces a yellow dye that was used extensively during the 1860s.
