Spindle
Euonymus europaeus
46.251, 6.11003
Field Notes
Description:
A deciduous shrub, some 3-4m tall. In winter, when most of the forest is naked, these shrubs leave these flushes of bright colours on edges of forests and hedges. What we see here are open and spent fruits: these four-lobe capsular fruits mature in autumn, and open liberating seeds. Then, these empty capsules remain on naked branches sometimes all winter, resisting to cold and frost.
Habitat:
Here seen on hedges and edges of a lowland oak forest near our town, suburbs of Geneva, Geneva lake valley.
Notes:
All parts of the Spindle are toxic - I just don't know how dangerous they may be.
