Field Notes

Description:

This gorgeous gal flew in from the back yard attracted to our lights. About 70mm wingspan. Like the other Hepialids she was quite happy to clamber onto my fingers.

Habitat:

From an outer urban back yard surrounded by nature reserves and national park.

Notes:

The larvae of these spend a few years inside a tunnel in a shrubby stem, covered at day time with a silk and sawdust curtain, and coming out at night to feed on leaves. The male of these looks very different - green with some white lines over the wings..
South-eastern Australia including Tasmania.
