Springtail Larva
Acanthanura sp.
-37.8827, 145.357
Field Notes
Description:
This little blue-black podgy creature is the larva of a springtail. It was about 1 cm in length and extremely active around mould covered mushrooms (probably mycena). The body showed soft spiny outgrowths which were red.
The larvae had soft segmented antennae.
Habitat:
Spotted on fungi on a gum tree.
Seems to be restricted to the Southeastern parts of Australia
Notes:
They are cute and the largest of springtail larvae. It is stated that they live on fungal hyphae, spores and slime mold. I am not able to find much else on this species.
Order: Collembola
